How to Clean UGGs

How to Clean UGGs

UGGs have been a winter must-have for years, and they just keep getting trendier with every new release. Their sheepskin outers and fleece inners are equal parts cozy and stylish; however, there’s one major challenge: they get dirty very easily.

Water lines, salt stains, dirt, mud, and more all pose obstacles for maintaining your UGGs. But never fear—we’ve compiled a list of the best tips for how to clean UGGs below.

Learn how to clean the outside of UGGs, clean the inside of UGGs, and prevent future damage to your favorite pair here.

How to Clean the Outside of UGGs

UGGs’ exteriors are made of sheepskin, which is used for its softness and breathability. Sheepskin also keeps your feet close to body temperature, even during cold winter days.

Sheepskin is similar to suede in its tendency to attract stains and its need to be cleaned very carefully. Harsh cleaning products and scrubbing are never advisable due to the sensitive material. Instead, follow these steps:

1. Remove caked-on mud and dirt

Use a suede-specific brush to dust dirt and debris off your UGGs. Make sure to only brush in one direction rather than back and forth—the latter can disrupt the nap (the soft, fuzzy exterior). Apply only gentle pressure, if needed at all. We recommend the Four Seasons suede brush.

2. Dampen the whole shoe

Use a damp cloth to gently moisten the entire shoe. Sheepskin is very sensitive to water, so do NOT soak. Even if the area you want to clean is small, apply an even layer of water to the entire shoe to avoid water lines appearing between dry and wet areas.

3. Use a gentle cleaner

Mix a 50/50 mixture of water and vinegar. Use a cloth or sponge to lightly apply across the whole shoe. As in step 1, make sure to only move in one direction, and never scrub.

Alternative cleaning products include baby shampoo and suede-specific shampoos. These are ideal for those who dislike the smell of vinegar.

4. Rinse cleaner with a damp cloth.

Repeat step 2 to gently rinse the remaining cleaner off.

5. Blot with a dry cloth.

Use a dry cloth to absorb as much excess moisture as possible. Do not scrub; blotting should do the trick.

6. Stuff and let air dry

Stuff crumpled newspaper into the shoe to absorb any moisture that may leak through and to help your UGGs keep their shape. Then, set them in a cool, dark place to air dry for 24-48 hours. Do not apply heat or leave in direct sunlight, as this may cause shrinkage or other aesthetic damage.

These simple steps will keep your UGGs looking brand new!

How to Clean the Inside of UGGs

The fleece-lined interior is what makes your UGGs so cozy and warm. Due to its texture, they tend to trap dirt and retain odors, so regular cleaning is essential. Here’s what we recommend.

1. Wash the interior

Use a damp, soapy cloth to scrub the fleece lining. You can apply more pressure to the liner than the outside, and back and forth motions are ok to remove buried dirt and debris.

2. Rinse excess soap

Use a different damp cloth with just water to remove all soap remnants.

3. Air Dry

Allow to dry for 24-48 hours in a dry, dark area such as a closet.

4. Remove odor as needed

If odor is a concern, sprinkle baking soda inside until the footbed is lightly coated. Let sit for at least 12 hours, and then vacuum out.

And just like that, your shoes will feel fluffy and smell like new once again!

How to Prevent Stains on UGGs

Beat water damage and stains to the punch by pretreating them with water-resistant spray. We recommend this protective spray, which is specially formulated to repel snow, rain, and salt from suede.

Whenever possible, try to avoid wearing your UGGs in actively wet conditions. Choose another pair if it’s presently raining or snowing, and avoid walking through snow banks or puddles.
